Umbrella Coverage

Chapman Insurance Group wants to make sure that you’re protected in all facets of life, which is why we offer umbrella insurance.

What is Umbrella Insurance?

Umbrella insurance is basically extra coverage. If coverage in another policy that you have doesn’t protect you fully, umbrella insurance extends beyond those limits and can cover you for injuries, property damage, certain lawsuits, and situations that involve personal liability.

How Does It Work?

Having an umbrella insurance policy protects you in these two ways:

  1. When the limits of your homeowners insurance, auto insurance, or boat insurance limits are exceeded, umbrella insurance provides coverage.
  2. Umbrella insurance covers claims that might be excluded from other liabilities policies – claims such as false arrest, libel, slander, and coverage on rental units that you own.

What Does It Cover?

When one of your other insurance policies doesn’t cover something, umbrella insurance will pick up the slack. In most cases, umbrella insurance covers:

  • Injuries
  • Property damage
  • Some lawsuits
  • Situations that involve personal liability

You might think that you don’t need umbrella insurance because you already have effective homeowners, auto, or boat insurance. But no matter how good your policies are, umbrella coverage goes above and beyond.

Coverage Examples

Umbrella insurance covers bodily injury liability, which refers to damages to someone else’s body. Umbrella insurance can cover their medical bills or liability claims in the event of injuries such as:

  • A car accident where you are at fault
  • Injury caused to someone by your dog (not all breeds are covered – talk to an agent to see if your dog is)
  • A car accident where you are at fault
  • Injury caused to someone by your dog (not all breeds are covered – talk to an agent to see if your dog is)

Umbrella insurance also covers property damage liability. Liability when it comes to property damage covers damage/loss of someone else’s tangible property. This could mean damage to another’s vehicle or property in the event of an accident where you are at fault.

Owners of rental units are also covered by umbrella insurance, and it protects against liability that you may experience as a landlord, including claims related to:

  • Someone injuring themselves on your rental property and suing you for damages
  • Your tenant’s dog injuring someone on your property and holding you responsible for the affected person’s injury (once again, talk to an agent about covered dog breeds)
Additional coverage is provided if you’re sued for:
  • Slander
  • Libel
  • False arrest
  • Malicious prosecution
  • Shock/mental anguish

What’s Not Covered?

As with any other coverage, there are things that umbrella insurance does not protect you from, such as:

  • Personal injuries or damage to your own property
  • An intentional criminal act that causes damage to someone else
  • Contractual liability
